Identity & Personal Legal Changes Document Preparation in California
Helping individuals prepare the court documents needed for legal name changes, gender marker updates, and other personal legal changes in California.
Identity & Personal Legal Changes Document Preparation in California
Your legal name and the gender marker on your identification documents are a fundamental part of how you are recognized by courts, government agencies, employers, and financial institutions. When that information does not reflect who you are, updating it through the California court system is an important step - and the paperwork involved does not have to be a barrier.
At Ashlar LDA, Inc., we help individuals prepare the court petitions and supporting documents required for legal name changes, gender marker changes, and related personal legal updates in California. We are Legal Document Assistants, not attorneys, and we do not provide legal advice. All documents are prepared based on the information and instructions you provide. Everyone is welcome here.
Identity & Personal Legal Changes Document Services
We prepare the following types of documents for individuals seeking legal identity and personal changes in California:
Adult Name Change Petition
The court petition used by adults to legally change their name in California, filed in the superior court of the county where you live.
Gender Marker Change Petition
The court petition used to update the gender designation on California court records, which can then support updates to other official documents.
Combined Name and Gender Marker Petition
A single petition filing that requests both a legal name change and a gender marker change at the same time, streamlining the process into one court proceeding.
Name Change for a Minor
Petition documents for parents or guardians seeking to legally change a child's name, including the required notice and consent provisions.
Order to Show Cause for Name Change
The court order that sets the hearing date and publishes the required notice, a step in the standard California name change process for adults.
Decree Changing Name
The final court order granting the name change, prepared for the judge's signature at the conclusion of the proceeding.
Adult Legal Name Change Document Preparation
In California, any adult can petition the superior court for a legal name change. The process typically involves filing a petition, publishing a notice in a local newspaper, and attending a brief court hearing. Once the court grants the change, you receive a certified copy of the decree that you can use to update your driver's license, Social Security records, passport, bank accounts, and other documents.
The paperwork for a name change includes the petition itself, an order to show cause that sets the hearing date, and the final decree. We prepare all three documents as a complete package based on your current name, your desired new name, and the county where you are filing.
- NC-100 Petition for Change of Namethe core petition stating your current name, your requested new name, and the reason for the change
- NC-120 Order to Show Cause for Change of Namethe court order that schedules the hearing and triggers the publication requirement
- NC-130 Decree Changing Namethe final order signed by the judge confirming the name change

Start Name Change PreparationGender Marker Change Document Preparation
California allows individuals to petition the court for a change to the gender designation on their court records. Under California law, no medical documentation is required to request this change. The available gender designations in California include female, male, and nonbinary.
A gender marker change can be requested on its own or combined with a legal name change in a single court filing. Having a court order in hand is an important step toward updating the gender marker on your California driver's license, state ID, and birth certificate if you were born in California.
We prepare the NC-200 Petition for Change of Gender and Name, or the standalone gender change petition, based on the information you provide. We do not provide advice on which government agencies to contact after the court order is issued or how to update specific documents - those steps are yours to take once you have the court order in hand.
Legal Name Change for a Child
Parents or legal guardians can petition the court to change a minor child's name in California. The process is similar to an adult name change but includes additional requirements related to notice and, in some cases, the consent of both parents.
When both parents agree to the name change and both sign the petition, the process can be straightforward. When one parent does not consent, additional steps may be required before the court acts on the petition. We prepare the documents for the filing based on the information you provide about the child, the current legal name, and the requested new name.
