Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about our services and how Legal Document Assistants work.

What does a Legal Document Assistant do?

A Legal Document Assistant (LDA) prepares legal documents at the direction of clients who are representing themselves. LDAs are registered and bonded professionals in California who help people with paperwork for court filings, business formation, estate planning, and other legal matters. LDAs do not provide legal advice and are not attorneys.

Is this cheaper than hiring a lawyer?

Yes. LDA services are significantly less expensive than attorney fees for document preparation. Attorneys typically charge hourly rates that can range from $200 to $500 or more per hour. Ashlar LDA, Inc. charges flat fees for document preparation packages, so you know the cost upfront.

Can an LDA represent me in court?

No. Legal Document Assistants cannot represent clients in court, provide legal advice, or make legal decisions on your behalf. We prepare documents based on the information and instructions you provide. If you need legal representation, we recommend consulting with a licensed attorney.

What types of documents can you prepare?

Ashlar LDA, Inc. prepares documents across fourteen practice areas. Visit our services pages for complete details. Each area includes multiple document types. Visit our services pages for complete details.

How long does document preparation take?

Standard document preparation typically takes 5 to 10 business days depending on the complexity of the case and how quickly you provide the required information. Rush processing is available for an additional fee if you need faster turnaround.

Do you file documents for clients?

We prepare documents that are ready for filing. In most cases, clients file their own documents with the court or agency. We provide clear instructions on where and how to file. For some services, we can assist with coordinating the filing process.

What information do I need to provide?

The specific information depends on the type of case. For every service, we provide a detailed intake questionnaire that walks you through exactly what we need. Generally, you will need to provide personal information, relevant dates, financial details, and the specifics of your situation.

Do I need to come to your office?

No. All of our services are available remotely. You can complete intake forms online, provide documents electronically, and communicate with us by phone or email. We serve clients throughout California.

What is the difference between an LDA and a paralegal?

A paralegal works under the supervision of an attorney. A Legal Document Assistant works directly with clients who are representing themselves. Both prepare legal documents, but an LDA operates independently and is registered and bonded by the state of California.

What kind of documents we can prepare?

We offer document preparation services across 14 legal areas, as outlined in our Services section.
